STFC is an organisation dedicated to advancing knowledge. The more we can do to develop our people, the further we can go to achieve that goal.
On an individual level, the resources we put into learning and training are an investment in you and your future.
Whatever stage you’re at in your career, you’ll find a wealth of ways to enhance your skills, qualifications, expertise and understanding - we’re just as committed to developing experienced professionals as we are our apprentices, interns and graduates.
Our focus on employee development earned us the Investors in People Gold Standard in 2014 and the Institute of Physics Best Practice in Professional Development award in 2012.
We support 80% of our graduates to gain chartered membership of a professional body and many of our apprentices go on to do the same – as do many of the experienced professionals who join us. We are accredited with bodies including the IMechE, IET and IoP, and we have achieved an interim accreditation with the British Computer Society.
In some cases we are able to fund or part fund academic qualifications. For example on completing our Apprentice scheme, some employees then go on to study part-time for a degree.
Every employee has their own development plan – linked to an annual appraisal. This is far more than a once a year chat. It’s a way for you to take control of your development and future direction of your career.
This leadership development programme has been created to identify and nurture employees with the clear potential to become future directors of the organisation and move into positions of leadership within three-five years.
Formal managerial and technical training will be identified with you and provided to support you in your work.
We’ve worked hard to make informal learning an everyday experience. You’re encouraged to gain as much as you can from the tasks you undertake and the colleagues around you.
There are regular networking events and opportunities across our different facilities – you have the opportunity to meet with colleagues in other areas and disciplines.
Depending on your role, you may have the opportunity to be seconded to other teams or STFC facilities – or even to partner organisations, such as CERN, Institut Laue-Lingevin or a government organisation.
You’ll be actively encouraged to progress your careers within STFC. Every vacancy here is advertised internally and you’re welcome to apply for a more senior role or an opportunity in a different area of the organisation at any time.
